What is my energy forecast?

Your forecast is the average energy you've used recently — and it’s the number you’re trying to beat every #OhmHour.  Use less energy than your forecast during the #OhmHour and you get points. Use more than your forecast, and you'll loose points. Here's how a forecast gets made:

Day of the week matters: In most cases, #OhmHours happen on weekdays, when your forecast will be calculated by averaging the energy you used over the previous 10 weekdays. If the #OhmHour falls on a weekend (which can happen!), your forecast is based on the previous 4 weekend days.

Time of day matters: Your forecast is set by looking at the same hour as the #OhmHour on those previous days. 

Let's use some examples: if you have an #OhmHour scheduled for 6pm on Friday, your forecast would be based on how much energy you used from 6-7pm every day on the previous 10 weekdays. If your #OhmHour was on Saturday at 2pm, your forecast would be based on your energy use on the last 4 weekend days between 2-3pm.

How can I beat my forecast?

Beating your forecast can take a little effort. But knowing a few tips and tricks, like what to turn off around your house, is a great start. Here are a few things you should do for every #OhmHour to maximize your savings, earn more points, and put more cash in your pocket:

  • Unplug chargers and electronics that use energy even when turned off, such as computers, stereo equipment, TVs, video game consoles, DVD payers, phone chargers. 
  • Plan activities for your family that don't involve lots of energy-use. Some ideas include: picnic dinners, walks around the neighborhood, and playing board games by candlelight. Tell us what you do during #OhmHours an earn 20 tokens!
  • Avoid running the dishwasher, washer dryer, vacuum cleaner, or power tools during your #OhmHour. 
  • Put your entertainment center, computer, and  groups of other appliances or electronics on power strips so you can turned everything on and off all at once.
  • Take it to the next level and automate your #OhmHours — plug that power strip into a TP-link smart plug and let us turn it off for you. Learn more about automating with smart devices here. 
  • Track down and unplug small electric appliances in the kitchen or bathroom. 
  • If you have any, turn off any pool or hot-tub heaters and cleaners.
  • Set your AC a bit higher or just turn it off completely! The biggest energy user in the home is HVAC systems.  Or you can add a smart thermostat to your home and let OhmConnect do it all for you!
  • Avoid opening your refrigerator and freezer during the OhmHour, particularly on hot days. Better yet, connect a TP-link smart plug to your fridge to have it shut down automatically during your #OhmHours.
  • Turn off the lights in rooms that are not being used.  Some families like using rechargeable head lamps or planning a candlelight dinner during evening #OhmHours.
